EUROPEAN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND

The ERDF aims to strengthen economic and social cohesion in the European Union by correcting imbalances between its regions, with special attention to the specific features of each region. This is why area disadvantaged from a geographic or demographic point of view (mountainous, inhabited or remote) benefit from special treatment. It applies equally to the most remote areas in order to resolve their disadvantages due to their isolation. 

The ERDF will focus its activity on the following objectives:

  1. Research and innovation
  2. Information and communication technologies (ICT) 
  3. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  4. Promoting a low carbon economy 

The ERDF-Spain for the 2014-2020 period has a volume of 19,408.8 million Euros.

Region of Murcia

The Murcia Region will implement a regional ERDF Operation programme, the total allocation of which amounts to 296.40 million Euros from European funding which will be devoted to the following priorities and with the following percentages:

  • 55% to strengthening research, technological development and innovation; improving the use, quality and access to ICT; the competitiveness of SMEs facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy by increasing the use of renewable energy; to reducing the energy consumption by improving efficiency and promoting smart energy systems. 
  • 33.32% to the conservation and protection of the environment and promoting the efficiency of natural resources, in order to meet adequately the needs existing in the region on environmental issues (mitigation of climate change, improving the management of waste and protection of biodiversity).
  • 11.68% to promote social inclusion, combat poverty and all forms of discrimination and to invest in education, skills development and learning on a permanent basis. Such arrangements are intended firstly, to maintain investment in educational infrastructures at all levels of education as a way of contributing to the adequate training of young people and secondly, to reduce the problem of shanty constructions in certain municipalities in the region.

In addition, the operational programme has designed the Mar Menor ITI to improve the Mar Menor Strategy for Integrated Coastal Zones Management under the following funds: FEMP, ERDF and ESF.
