CITIZEN PARTICIPATION

Any national of a Member State is a citizen of the European Union and this status allows citizens to enjoy a set of general rights in various areas, such as the free movement of goods and services, consumer protection and public health, equal opportunities and treatment, access to jobs and social protection.

The aim of European citizenship is to strengthen and consolidate European identity by greater involvement of the citizens in the Community integration process.

To facilitate this, all citizens have a voice and can express their opinion on EU policies and actions. As well as the work of the institutions, there are instruments and debate spaces to make it possible such as:

- The European citizens' initiative allowing EU citizens to participate by making a legislative proposal.

- Petitions web portal.

- European Ombudsman.

- Public consults and other participation tools: “Your Voice in Europe”, where the European Commission grants access to some debate forums and other tools in order to take part in the decision making process..
