Pact of Mayors

The European Commission launched in 2008 the "Covenant for Mayors" to support the efforts developed by local authorities in the implementation of sustainable energy policies.

The Institute of Development of the Region of Murcia (INFO), is the support structure of the PACT OF THE MAYORS for the region of Murcia. As coordinators of the Pact, they offer strategic guidance and technical and financial support to the municipalities that have signed the Covenant of Mayors but lack the capacities and / or resources necessary to meet the requirements.

The objective of the coordinators is to promote and support the adoption of mitigation measures to climate change by the municipalities, inviting them to meet the European Union's target of reducing CO2 emissions by 20% by 2020, the reduction in energy consumption at least 20% and the increase in the use of renewable energy by 20%.

The Covenant of Mayors is a movement that has managed to mobilize a large number of local and regional authorities to develop action plans and guide investments towards mitigating the effects of climate change.

Following the success of the Covenant of Mayors, the "Mayors Adapt" initiative was launched in 2014, based on the same model of public management, by which cities were invited to assume political commitments and take measures to anticipate the inevitable effects of climate change.

At the end of 2015, both initiatives were merged into the "Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy", through which the EU's objectives for 2030 were adopted and a comprehensive approach was adopted to mitigate climate change and eliminate this. The new signatories promise to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 40% by 2030 and adopt a comprehensive approach to address climate change tensions and turbulence.

In February 2018 the Anniversary of the Covenant of Mayors was celebrated. It showed how local governments have developed integrated mitigation and adaptation strategies since 2008 to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, transport or lighting, make greater use of renewable energy and prepare for climate risks. In this ceremony, the mayors explored how these achievements can be expanded to help meet or exceed the EU's energy and climate goals.
