These years have meant an undoubted growth and development for the Region of Murcia, which all citizens have been able to perceive and which have their basis in a relevant way, without any doubt, in the European Cohesion Policy, the main instrument of regional solidarity of that the EU has.

Local and regional authorities play a fundamental role in making visible and strengthening the European identity; so that citizens understand what it means to "be European", the common values and principles that we share, the advantages and opportunities of our Union membership.
For this, from the Region of Murcia, all the means at our disposal are used: those offered by the Treaty, through the Committee of the Regions also going to the national ministries to translate our voice to the Council, and to the MEPs of our territories to complete and reinforce our action before the European Parliament.

But also from the Region the participation of an informed citizenship and in the construction of the European Union is encouraged.

Government of the Region of Murcia has a General Directorate of the European Union and other specialized units, like Europe Direct CenterOperum or Info , who works on European Programmes and helps searching partners.

Know The Region Of Murcia

The Region of Murcia is a uniprovincial autonomous community, located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, and which borders Andalusia, the Valencian Community, Castilla La Mancha and the Mediterranean Sea. Its capital is the city of Murcia, which is the seat of the regional institutional bodies, with the exception of the Regional Assembly, located in Cartagena. The total population of the Region of Murcia is 1,464,847 inhabitants. Just under a third lives in the capital and half is distributed between the municipalities of Murcia, Cartagena and Lorca. It is a relatively small community to be uniprovincial-being the ninth in Spain on the surface and the tenth in population. However, as a province it is one of the most populated of the fifty that the country has, specifically the seventh most populated one. Most of the Region of Murcia has a semi-arid Mediterranean climate. Their winters are mild and hot summers (with maximum of 40 ºC). The average annual temperature is 18 ºC. In its orography alternate mountainous systems, valleys, depressions, plains and littorals, with pluviometric indices and diverse temperatures.
The region is a major producer of fruits and vegetables for the rest of Spain and European Union. Murcia is mainly a warm region wich has made it very suitable for agriculture. Water is supplied by the Segura River and, since the 1970s, by the Tajo transvasement, a major civil engineering project.

• Energy is another sector with a future in the Region. In addition to the Escombreras Valley energy complex, which is also an important source of activity for the Port of Cartagena, the production of energy from renewable sources, mainly solar energy, has optimum conditions in the Region and should be exploited also to promote research activities and technological innovation in this area.

• On the other hand, the petrochemical industry, which will be reinforced with the construction of the last generation Lubricant Bases Plant, constitutes a sector of great importance in the Region, mainly in the Cartagena area, which also supports other sectors like the agricultural one and that generates to his around other activities, to the time that constitutes an exporting sector.

• Logistics and transport have to reach an important development using to the maximum the existing infrastructures and those that will be in operation in the near future, in order to take advantage of the transport capacity in the Mediterranean Arc and towards the center of the peninsula, of all kinds of merchandise and transport (refrigerators and generalists, processed food, natural stone, bulk and containers).

The Region's export activity, which accounts for 3.7% of all sales abroad in Spain, has experienced a better evolution in this period than the national average.
