What is TRITON?
TRITON (Improve the policy instruments efficiency of marine sites of community importance) is a project funded by the Interreg Europe program that aims to improve the effectiveness of public policies related to the conservation of marine protected areas in Europe.
The project addresses the common challenges faced by Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), particularly regarding biodiversity preservation, adaptation to climate change, human pressure on coastal ecosystems, and the need to strengthen environmental governance.
TRITON promotes the exchange of experiences and best practices among European regions to improve policy instruments related to marine protection and ensure more coordinated, sustainable, and resilient management.
Overall Objective
The main objective of TRITON is to improve the efficiency of regional policy instruments related to the conservation and management of marine protected areas, fostering more integrated and participatory governance.
The project also aims to strengthen the capacity of public administrations to address current and future environmental challenges through innovative solutions based on interregional cooperation.
Specific Objectives
Improve the management of marine protected areas included in Natura 2000.
Exchange experiences and best practices among European regions.
Strengthen coordination among administrations, scientific institutions, and local stakeholders.
Promote more effective public policies for marine conservation.
Facilitate the adaptation of coastal ecosystems to climate change.
Promote participatory and sustainable governance models.
Main Activities
Among the planned activities within the project are:
Organization of interregional meetings and technical seminars.
Exchange of experiences and study visits among European partners.
Identification and analysis of best practices in marine conservation.
Development of regional action plans.
Development of tools to improve the governance of marine protected areas.
Participation of local stakeholders and entities involved in environmental and coastal management. Participation of the Region of Murcia
The Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia participates in TRITON through the Directorate General for Natural Heritage and Climate Action.
The region's participation focuses particularly on improving the conservation and management of marine protected areas linked to the Murcian coastline and the Mar Menor lagoon, one of the most unique and sensitive coastal ecosystems in the Mediterranean.
The Region's experience will allow for the exchange of knowledge with other European territories and advance innovative solutions for the protection of marine biodiversity and climate resilience.
Project Partners
TRITON brings together regional partners and European entities specializing in environmental management and marine conservation from various European countries.
The partnership works together to improve regional policies related to marine protected areas and transfer effective solutions between territories.
