Murcia hosted the eleventh edition of its now emblematic "City of Murcia" debate tournament on February 13, 14, and 15. The BP format featured 40 teams and was organized with great dedication by the University of Murcia Debate Club.

The Murcian winter was transformed into a vibrant setting to welcome nearly 120 debaters and judges from across Spain. It wasn't just another tournament on the calendar; it was a demonstration of the Club's organizational prowess, successfully coordinating 40 teams and 28 judges over a weekend where critical thinking and public speaking took center stage.

The tournament consisted of six high-voltage, thematic qualifying rounds. The competition began with a phase that tested the participants' versatility. From Tolkien's epic fantasy in the first round, where the debate centered on whether Arwen should renounce her immortality for love of Aragorn, to the stark political reality of the second round, analyzing whether drugs are being demonized by left-wing interests.

As is tradition on the circuit, the tournament wasn't confined to the classroom. Murcian hospitality shone brightly at the social events. On Friday, the La Gramola karaoke bar witnessed that, while many are excellent speakers, few are great singers, providing moments of relaxation and much-needed laughter after the nerves of the first rounds.

Saturday raised the bar with futuristic and technologically driven motions. The third round, the first of the morning, introduced the "Bio-Mimetics" from Aeterna Robotics, posing ethical dilemmas about identity and the personalized modeling of androids. Next, the fourth round delved into current business affairs with an analysis of the Apple-Google agreement on Gemini, questioning the technological sovereignty of the Cupertino company.

The final stretch of the qualifiers offered no respite. The fifth round took us to Taiwan to debate the "pragmatic realism" of Taiwanese policy by Cheng Li-Wun in relation to Beijing. To conclude the first part of the tournament, the sixth round closed the regular phase with a profound aesthetic discussion on musealization and the value of the exhibition as a unit of artistic meaning.

After six nail-biting rounds, the break revealed the eight best teams: GAD-UAM FEDER funds for rural tourism, UC3M PR, UAM URJC, CIVilizando Murcia, Llegó el Dalai Lama, UB not war yes peace, URJC Peter Parker y Mary Jane, and Psiconutrias El regreso. The semifinals, focused on the controversial trade agreement between the EU and MERCOSUR, served as the final filter. From there emerged the four finalists who would face off in the final round: UC3M PR, GAD-UAM (FEDER funds for rural tourism), UAM URJC, and the team with a spiritual name but sharp rhetoric, "The Dalai Lama Has Arrived."

The Grand Final presented a dystopian yet fascinating scenario: the "National Purge Law." In a debate marked by pragmatism, the UC3M PR team emerged victorious after a memorable performance that convinced the jury.

On Saturday, the party at Farándula Murcia provided the perfect ending to the event, strengthening the bonds that make the debate community a family. Thus, the 11th BP Ciudad de Murcia concludes, leaving a great impression and solidifying its position as an unmissable event. The University of Murcia has once again demonstrated that, amidst lemons and sunshine, Spanish debate has one of its most solid and vibrant havens.
