BREXIT

Brexit

On March 29, 2017, the United Kingdom officially notified the European Council of its intention to leave the European Union. It is a decision that the Spanish Government, firm defender of the European project, regrets, but that corresponds to the British people.

A period of two years was then opened for the European Union and the United Kingdom to negotiate an agreement that would regulate their withdrawal and future relationship, in order to achieve an orderly exit.

The negotiators of both parties reached an agreement on the text of the Withdrawal Agreement that was assumed by the European Council (Article 50) on November 25, 2018. On January 15 and March 12, 2019 the British Parliament voted against of the Withdrawal Agreement. Since then, the British Government is exploring alternatives to avoid a withdrawal without agreement.

Since the best option has been agreed upon, the Government of Spain has worked from the start, both at European level and internally in all scenarios, so that the impact of leaving the United Kingdom is as low as possible.

This website aims to provide the necessary information to deal with the new situation, so that citizens and economic operators know what is Brexit, how the negotiation process has developed and inform of the changes that the departure from the United Kingdom of the European Union will imply for their interests, as well as the contingency measures that are being adopted both internally and at European level.
