300 students from 15 educational centers are taking the subject of 'The Spanish Constitution and the European Union' this year

A total of 300 third-year Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) students from 15 schools in the Region of Murcia have chosen the optional subject of "The Spanish Constitution and the European Union" this year, which was introduced for the first time last year.
The Minister of Education and Vocational Training, Víctor Marín, participated today in a meeting with students from the IES Cañada de las Eras (Molina de Segura), where he explained his work as a member of the Government of the Region of Murcia, the responsibilities of managing a Ministry, and the legislative process. Marín was accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Murcia, Ignacio González; the Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Murcia, Francisco Manuel García; and the Principal of the IES, José Sampedro.
At this school, around twenty students are taking this subject and have worked throughout the year on four content blocks based on the concept of democracy, the democratic evolution of Spain and the 1978 Spanish Constitution, the origin, evolution, and institutions of the European Union, and the Statute of Autonomy of the Region of Murcia.
The students have participated by completing practical assignments and presentations and have received visits from regional and national deputies, members of the European Parliament, senators, and former mayors. They have also had the opportunity to visit the Senate and the Congress of Deputies in Madrid, and the Regional Assembly in Cartagena.
The optional course, "The Spanish Constitution and the European Union," which consists of two hours of instruction per week, allows students to gain an understanding of the realities of society, learn about their rights in order to exercise and protect them, understand how decisions are made in the country and in the autonomous communities, appreciate equality and democracy, and comprehend the laws of the State, the European Union, and the Region of Murcia.
The teachers who teach the subject have received specific training through the Teacher and Resource Center of the Regional Ministry of Education. The Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the University of Murcia are collaborating on the implementation of this subject.
The Regional Minister recalled that “the regional government was a pioneer last year in implementing this subject in Secondary Education and, furthermore, the Regional Ministry, together with the University of Murcia, promoted the Chair of Constitutional Education and also collaborates with the University of Murcia on various activities, including the Constitutional Olympiad of the Region of Murcia.”
The Cañada de las Eras Secondary School has 1,630 students and 134 teachers.
