The application period for the 2027 European Capitals of Tourism Award is now open.

The European Commission is launching the 2027 edition of the European Capitals of Tourism Award today. Tourist destinations across Europe are invited to submit their most innovative and sustainable tourism initiatives, positioning themselves as leading examples in this field.
The Commission will award two destinations that demonstrate exceptional achievements in two categories. The first category is open to destinations with more than 100,000 inhabitants and recognizes excellence in sustainability, accessibility, digitalization, cultural heritage, and creativity. The second category is open to destinations with between 25,000 and 100,000 inhabitants and recognizes smaller destinations that are leading the way in sustainable tourism.
As one of the EU's largest economic sectors, tourism plays a key role in economic growth and job creation. It contributes to regional development, supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and helps preserve cultural heritage. At the same time, the tourism sector faces significant challenges, such as geopolitical instability, climate change, a shortage of skilled workers, and overcrowding in major tourist destinations. The European Capitals of Tourism initiative recognizes and celebrates destinations that implement innovative solutions in areas such as digitalization, accessibility, and sustainability, as well as supporting cultural heritage, creativity, and local talent.
The application period for the European Capitals of Tourism is open until June 12 at 5:00 p.m. CEST. Further information about the award and the prizes is available online.
