The European Commission has adopted a new strategic framework to promote a bioeconomy that strengthens the competitiveness, sustainability, and resilience of the EU.

Bioeconomy is defined as the set of activities that use biological resources (such as plants, animals, or microorganisms) to produce goods and services in a sustainable way, thereby generating economic value and benefiting the environment. The goal is to move towards a circular and decarbonized economy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels by using renewable biological resources from land and sea. In short, this initiative aims to transform the European economy into a cleaner, more innovative, and resilient model, generating jobs and leading the global transition towards sustainable industries.

The economic importance of bioeconomy is evident as it already represents 2.7 trillion euros and 17.1 million jobs in the EU, with huge potential to create more employment, innovation, and growth. Each direct job creates three indirect jobs. Furthermore, it allows the replacement of fossil materials with sustainable alternatives, such as bioplastics and bio-based chemicals, textile fibers, construction materials, and fertilizers.

Main Action Lines of the Strategy:

  • Promote innovation and investment: Facilitate public and private financing, simplify regulations, and accelerate approvals so that biological solutions reach the market.

  • Develop leading markets: Promote biological-based technologies and materials in key sectors (plastics, textiles, construction, biotechnology, biorefineries).

  • Ensure sustainable use of biomass: Protect soils, forests, and ecosystems, promote circularity, and make use of agricultural and organic waste.

  • Seize global opportunities: Position Europe as a global leader in bioeconomy, reduce vulnerabilities, and ensure competitiveness in an uncertain geopolitical context.

In the Region of Murcia, bioeconomy is generating real opportunities in key sectors. The region is driving bioeconomy with support for bioenergy, circular projects, and collaboration with universities and technological centers for digitization and innovation. Its strong agricultural sector, dynamic business fabric, and leading research centers position it as a leader in Spain.
