The Murcia City Council, through the Department of Citizen Security and Emergencies led by Fulgencio Perona, reports on the participation of the Murcia Local Police in the follow-up meeting of the European project DATA EQUALITY and in an advanced international training course for trainers, held on December 3 and 4 at the headquarters of the Center for Security Studies (KEMEA) in Athens, Greece.
DATA EQUALITY is a project funded by the European Union whose aim is to prevent discrimination arising from the institutional use of data, especially in contexts where technologies based on artificial intelligence are applied. Through the analysis of good practices, the detection of biases, and the development of tools and training programs, this initiative promotes a fair, inclusive, and ethical use of data in public bodies, including police forces.
The Murcia Local Police, through its European Projects Department, is an active member of the project’s international consortium, contributing its experience as a force committed to modernization, fundamental rights, and institutional innovation.
As highlighted by Councillor Fulgencio Perona, “Murcia is demonstrating that a local police force can position itself on the European front line when it comes to advancing equality, digital ethics, and security. Our participation in this project directly contributes to building fairer institutions that are better prepared for today’s technological challenges.”
On December 3, the consortium’s follow-up meeting took place, during which the progress of the project was reviewed, the planning of the training to be implemented at the European level was discussed, and the European Equality Data Manual was presented.
The Murcian delegation presented its perspective on the use of data in daily operations and the need to incorporate safeguards to prevent any type of bias or discrimination. Perona emphasized that “the use of data is today an essential tool, but it must always be handled with criteria of responsibility and with full respect for fundamental rights.”
On December 4, the training-of-trainers session was held, focusing on technical content related to bias detection, ethical and legal safeguards, teaching methodologies, and practical exercises. Thanks to this preparation, the Murcia Local Police will implement a specific training program in 2026 to ensure that the use of data is carried out in an equitable, transparent, and secure manner. The councillor added that “this training will allow Murcia to continue leading institutional improvement processes, providing officers with advanced tools for a more effective and fair public service.”
The involvement of the Murcia City Council in DATA EQUALITY represents a firm step toward building a modern, approachable police force fully aligned with democratic values. This project strengthens the city’s European positioning and has a direct impact on the quality of the service provided to citizens. The European Projects Department of the Murcia Local Police continues to work to ensure that the city remains at the forefront of the transformations demanded by the present, promoting initiatives that consolidate Murcia as a benchmark for innovation and public security at the European level.
