The Jumilla Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) has been named "Region of the Year" in the Discover Spain report, prepared by international experts Tim Atkin MW and Beth Willard. This recognition is highly significant for the entire wine sector of the region, as it highlights the collective effort made by winegrowers and wineries in favor of the quality, innovation, and authenticity of their wines.
The report emphasizes the evolution of Jumilla PDO wines in recent years, as well as the ability of its producers to craft increasingly balanced, fresh wines that are representative of the terroir. The publication also places numerous wines from the designation among the highest-rated in Spain, consolidating the international reputation of one of the country's most dynamic wine regions.
Among the accolades received, the excellent scores achieved by several wineries within the designation stand out. The results from Bodegas Cerrón have been particularly noteworthy, with its wines receiving some of the highest ratings in the report, reinforcing the prestige of the Jumilla PDO in national and international markets. Likewise, numerous wineries within the appellation have exceeded 90 points in the expert ranking, reflecting the high level of quality achieved by the sector as a whole.
This recognition comes at a particularly significant time for Murcian winemaking, which is also strengthening its presence in European decision-making forums through the Region of Murcia's participation in the Wine Intergroup of the European Committee of the Regions. This body, established in 2025 and comprised of more than twenty-five wine-producing regions from different Member States, aims to defend the interests of the wine sector before EU institutions and promote greater regional involvement in the development of European wine policies.
The Region of Murcia has been part of this forum since its inception as a founding member, actively participating in debates on strategic issues for the sector, such as the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, the sustainability of vineyards, adaptation to climate change, the promotion of international trade, and the defense of European exports.
The Wine Intergroup has also established itself as a platform for cooperation among wine-producing regions, facilitating the exchange of experiences and the coordination of common positions in key areas for the future of the sector. Among the initiatives recently addressed are the protection of wine as European cultural heritage, the promotion of sustainable wine tourism, and the search for measures that contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of producing areas.
In fact, one of the Intergroup's most recent lines of work focuses on promoting European wine and culture routes as a tool to foster more balanced and sustainable tourism development, linking major urban destinations with rural wine-producing regions and generating new economic opportunities in the territory.
The distinction awarded to the Jumilla PDO and the Region of Murcia's active participation in the work of the Wine Intergroup demonstrate the excellent state of the regional wine sector. This sector, which combines tradition, innovation, and excellence, is increasingly gaining strength in both international markets and key European Union forums for debate and decision-making.
