The Community advocated for a European cohesion policy that guarantees a strong role for regions at the meeting of the Political Bureau of the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions (CPMR) held this week in Nicosia, Cyprus. This meeting also addressed other strategic issues related to transport, the future budgetary framework of the European Union, climate resilience, and the blue economy.
The Director-General for the European Union, Adrián Zittelli, participated in the meeting, which also covered topics such as the reform of financing instruments and the risks of budgetary recentralization. The CPMR presented its proposals on these issues to ensure a strong role for regions.
In this regard, Zittelli highlighted “the existing coordination among the Spanish regions, despite which they had limited participation in defining Spain’s negotiating position in the Council.”
The meeting of the CRPM, in which the Community holds the Vice-Presidency for Climate, also analyzed the development of specific EU strategies for islands and coastal communities focused on climate resilience, green transition, blue economy, innovation, and governance adapted to vulnerable territories.
Regarding climate action and resilience, Zittelli presented the regional and European strategic guidelines on the matter, including strengthening the political and technical role in responding to extreme climate risks.
