The European Commission and the Covenant of Mayors address the role of cities in the transition to sustainable heating and cooling systems

Local and regional authorities play a crucial role in combating climate change and adapting to extreme weather events. With this objective, the Covenant of Mayors of the European Union will organize the webinar “After Summer is before Winter: The role of local and regional authorities in strengthening sustainable heating and cooling” on September 23. This online workshop will bring together representatives from public administrations, experts, and members of the European Commission.
The event is being held at a particularly relevant time, as high summer temperatures begin to give way to the colder months, but the effects of heat waves and the growing need for cooling remain very much present. In this context, local and regional governments are at the forefront of responding to citizens' heating and cooling needs, ensuring adequate living conditions, and managing energy resources efficiently.
The webinar will analyze the role of renewable energies in heating and cooling systems, as well as the opportunities that electrification offers for moving towards a decarbonized economy. The initiative aligns with the objectives of the European Action Plan for Electrification, which highlights the importance of renewable heating and cooling as key tools for accelerating the energy transition and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
During the event, representatives from the European Commission will share key policy guidelines and regulatory developments in this area, while local and regional authorities will present practical examples and success stories from various European territories. The program will also include an open discussion forum for participants to exchange needs, challenges, and proposals.
The webinar aims to foster cooperation between European institutions, regions, and municipalities, reinforcing the role of local and regional governments in building a more sustainable, resilient, and efficient energy model.
