The digital product passport registry is now operational

Last week, the European Commission launched the registry for digital product passports.
The digital product passport will contain information about various products, such as their origin, reuse options, instructions for use, and regulatory compliance. It will typically be available via a QR code or similar digital format. This will increase the transparency of supply chains and help consumers make informed choices.
The new registry creates a secure, centralized repository that hosts metadata linked to the passports (such as their unique identifiers) without storing data on specific products, which remains with the economic operators or digital product passport service providers. As part of the Ecodesign Regulation for sustainable products, it will host information on digital product passports in the textile, steel, aluminum, tire, furniture, ICT, and energy-related product sectors, as well as those covered by sector-specific legislation, such as construction products, toys, and detergents.
Registration is an essential step to enable the full application of the digital product passport to various products, which is scheduled to be applied for the first time to certain types of batteries starting on February 18, 2027.
As a complement to registration, the Commission has launched a support service and a testing environment to help stakeholders prepare for the rollout of the digital product passport. This complements the recently created dedicated digital product passport website, which offers guidance, technical documentation, and support tools in preparation for the February 2027 deadline for applying the digital product passport to certain types of large batteries.
